What we choose
Things we can trace — who made them, where, and from what — with what we looked at to choose them.
Home›What we choose
What is listed here is not an answer.
It shows how TANE chooses.
These were things I struggled with,
and kept looking for. For your reference.
See the items (Japanese page)Read how we choose
If the same way of looking lets you choose something near where you live, that is better.
So this page writes what we looked at before it writes the thing itself.

01 / WHY
You do not have to make all of it
Miso can be made. So can soap.
We have handed those methods over in workshops.
Even so, making everything that goes into your mouth and onto your skin with your own hands is hard.
Some days we make. Some days we choose and buy.
Making and choosing look at the same place.
What is in it.
Who made it, where, and from what.
You look at that, and decide for yourself.
So for the part we do not make, we hand over the choosing instead.
02 / RULES
Four rules for choosing
We list things that meet these four as fully as possible.
It can be tracedWho makes it, where, and from what.
We try to choose things where that is knowable, things that can be traced.
The reason is written with itWe write what we looked at.
Where on the label our hand stopped. Which part of the method settled it.
So that the reader can choose something else, the same way.
Never “just buy this”What is listed is not an answer but a sample of how to choose.
If the same way of looking finds you something good in a shop near you, that is better.
Having you buy here is not the point.
Some days we make, some days we chooseSome days we make. Some days we choose and buy.
Either way, you look for yourself and decide for yourself.

03 / PLACE
What you can get depends on where you live
What is on the shelf depends on where you live.
What is sold in a shop in one country is not necessarily on a shelf in another.
Some things vanish with the season, and a maker may stop making.
So before the name of the thing, we write what we looked at.
You cannot carry the thing around with you. You can carry the way of looking.
When you cannot get it, look for something near you, the same way.
If it is something you could make, look at the method instead.

04 / ITEMS
What is here now
We list things that meet the four rules as fully as possible, so it grows slowly.
Filling up the list is not the point.
The items are listed on the Japanese page for now: where they are grown, who makes them, and what we looked at.
TRY IT
First, read the back of something already in your house
Of the things in your house right now, how many have you ever read the back of?
The kitchen shelf, or the one in the bathroom. Pick up just one and read the back.
If there is a name you cannot read, keep it in mind. It becomes a handhold the next time you choose.
Then make what you could make. For what you do not make, choose with a way of looking. Both are doing the same thing.
Skin
Starting from reading the label. See what is in it, then choose what suits you.
